I heard that melatonin is a hormone. I don't want to take hormones - don't they mess up your system and contribute to cancer? - The word hormone actually means a biological chemical communicator. Common usage has caused us to think of hormones only in the sense of estrogen and other reproductive hormones. Melatonin is naturally produced by the body in the pineal gland (located in the brain) and helps to regulate sleep. Melatonin production has been shown to decline with age, leading researchers to believe that melatonin supplementation may have anti-aging effects. This research is still preliminary. |
